CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR 2009 FRESH WOOD STUDENT COMPETITION

The deadline for entries for the AWFS 2009 Fresh Wood Student Woodworking Competition will be May 1, 2009.

The design competition is open to full-time students in an accredited high school or post-secondary woodworking or related program and part-time students in an accredited post-secondary woodworking or related program that are transitioning into a career in woodworking or design. Categories include case goods, chairs, class project, open, production, reproduction and tables.

Finalist designs will be on display at the AWFS®Fair in Las Vegas, July 15-18, 2009.

Updates for the 2009 competition

The $2,500 grant given to the Best of Show winner’s school will now be called the Larry Hilchie School Grant Award, in honor of Hilchie, who passed away in April. Hilchie was a member of the AWFS Board of Directors and was the chair of the AWFS Education Committee.

Projects entered in the competition must be completed at the time of entry with the exception of the finish coating. This new policy is designed to allow the judges more equitable comparisons of projects.

Final judging will take place on July 14 at the AWFS®Fair. Winners will be announced at the GALA Awards Dinner on Friday, July 17 at the Las Vegas Hilton. All finalists will also be featured in the fourth volume of the hardcover publication Fresh Wood, which will be available in Spring 2010.

The competition will once again have “front and center” billing at the AWFS Fair.

The student designs will be displayed in the main lobby of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

More than 200 entries were received for the 2007 Fresh Wood student competition.

AWFS distributed $24,000 in prize money for 35 pieces. Winning projects included a regulation pool table, a wooden sink, an acoustic guitar, a variety of contemporary design pieces as well as classic reproductions that included Arts and Crafts style furniture, Maloof rockers and a Philadelphia secretary desk.

All of the forms and guidelines for the 2009 Fresh Wood Competition can be accessed at www.awfsfair.org or by contacting AWFS at (800) 946-2937.

Wood Digest & Surface Fabrication To Host Webinar On 3cm Solid Surface

Surface Fabrication magazine in conjunction with Wood Digest will be hosting a live webinar titled “Opportunities in 3cm Solid Surface,” which is sponsored by Eos Surfaces, on Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. CST.

The webinar will discuss the benefits of working with 3cm solid surface and provide opportunities for fabricators to have their questions on the subject answered. The event is intended to be a useful educational tool for not only those already fabricating ½-in. solid surface, but also woodworkers and laminate fabricators considering the fabrication of solid surface.

The webinar will include a manufacturer’s presentation on the benefits of 3cm material that does not require edge buildups or lamination, as well as a presentation by end users that are currently working with the material. All attendees of the event will have an opportunity to ask questions of the presenters, and no software downloads are required for most.

More information and event registration is available at www.surfacefabrication.com/webcast.
